Cleopatra has the twin distinctions of being the most expensive movie ever made and the only one to lose money despite being the highest-grossing film of the year. Critics were not impressed when this film came out and, even today, critical opinion is divided. Nonetheless, it is a cinematic spectacle that is never boring. Audiences over the years have mostly disagreed with the critics. Cleopatra is the role Elizabeth Taylor will always be best remembered for.
Richard Burton is adequate as Mark Antony and Rex Harrison is very credible as Julius Caesar. The supporting cast is all first-rate. Overall, Cleopatra follows the historical accounts of that time fairly closely, but it deviates in a number of details, a few significantly. All in all, it fulfills the main purpose of a motion picture -- it entertains.
1963, Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz
