Based on the first of a series of science fiction novels by Frank Herbert and filmed at a studio in Mexico City. It was poorly received by most critics and didn't do well at the box office but it has become a sort of cult icon for true believers. The very complex plot involves a young man who was foretold as the great leader who would lead the natives of a desert planet in revolt against a malevolent colonial empire that controls the planet in order to harvest "spice" from the desert dunes. Some creative visual effects include sand worms the size of freight trains. When released, Dune ignited a great deal of controversy, both artistic and social, and writer/ director David Lynch distanced himself from the film, saying he was not allowed creative control and the final product was not what he intended. Over time, three different "cuts" of the film were released, each with some different segments removed or added. Yet, it is entertaining and has loyal fans. The all-star cast includes Kyle MacLachlan, Jose Ferrer, Silvana Mangano, Patrick Stewart, Sting, Dean Stockwell, Max von Sydow and a host of other American and European actors.
