Produced at a time when biblical epics were a Hollywood staple, The Ten Commandments was one of the most epic and one of the most financially successful films of all time. Charlton Heston played a number of larger-than-life characters in his film career: his portrayal of Moses in this film tops the list. He gets outstanding support from Yul Brynner as Pharoah, Anne Baxter as Queen Neferteri, John Derek (at a later time the husband of "Ten," Bo) as brother Aaron and Yvonne DeCarlo (later of "The Munsters" on TV) as the wife of Moses.
The supporting cast includes several major stars, including Edward G. Robinson, Nina Foch, Debra Paget, Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Vincent Price. The Ten Commandments was nominated for seven Oscars but received only one, for Visual Effects (the parting of the Red Sea being a prime example). This production was partly a remake of DeMille's 1923 silent film.
1956, Directed by Cecil B. DeMille,
the last film he directed.
